How Safe and Hack-Proof are Apple iPad Tablets: They can't be breached or hacked, right?

Wrong! They can be breached... As data in the past 4 years has shown.

With the growing popularity of the iPad (pegged at 70 million users worldwide and growing) attempts to try-n-hack the iPad in new and innovative ways will just increase.

And without an iOS security app protecting you on the internet, the chances of your iPad surviving those newfangled, beastly attacks, will be next to zero.

Let's get some facts straight:

An iPad is only as safe and "hack-proof" as the end user despite what people think and inspite of iOS -- the operating system running on all Apple iPads -- being a sandboxed system. A simple jailbreak might be enough in some cases to drastically lower the security of an Apple tablet by 40-50%.

Case in point regarding the changing nature of internet security: Apple's own Developer site was infiltrated and breached this past Thursday leading to a 24-hour shut down. There was a few more days of delay till the exact cause of that breach attempt (and the scope of data compromise) was investigated. There was speculation that the infiltration was done to highlight security bugs in Apple's systems and/or network.

Granted, it was a server breach, but it's not the first time that Apple's hack-proof (or whatever you call it) security credentials have been called into question. Besides, it's a crucial site used by 6 million developers worldwide which makes it kind of a big deal given the iOS 7 release date.

One key takeaway from this incident was this -- The only safe data in that breach attempt (user names, emails, passwords, mailing addresses) were the ones that were encrypted.

This brings to the fore the need for encryption on a personal iPad as well, both software and internet-wise.
